This little almond drink is so delicious…not to mention mighty rejuvenating and energizing…just what we all need for the new year! The recipe is from Dr. Lad’s, Ayurveda: The Science of Self-Healing: A Practical Guide book (one of my favorite go-to books for simple and effective ayurvedic remedies).

In the book he explains that this drink helps increase ojas which is a vital energy force that helps us stay rejuvenated and energized. Ojas is also the same energy that is increased when we do spiritual practices…so for all of you yogis and yogini’s, this is an excellent addition to support your practices. Best of all its fast…and yummy! It’s what I like to call the original protein drink. The one thing I add in addition to the original recipe is turmeric (only because it does wonders! Read about it here).

Here’s a little bit more of an excerpt on what Ojas is from Dr. Lad’s book,

…Ojas is the vital energy that controls the life-functions with the help of prana (energy)…Ojas contains all of the five basics elements and all the vital substances of the bodily tissues…It is responsible for the auto-immune system and for mental intelligence. On the psychological level, ojas is responsible for compassion, love, peace and creativity…A person with strong Ojas is attractive, with lustrous eyes and a spontaneous and calming smile… Such an individual is full of spiritual energy and power…Spiritual practices and celibacy also enhance these qualities…

Before I go any further, THANK YOU to all of you that posted your 2014 words…talk about inspiring! Here are some of the words for 2014….

Nurture , Enough , Voice of Silent Actions , Think Less, Do More , Be Still , and Always Look Ahead .

I loved what each of them wrote about why they were choosing these words; I could definitely resonate with all of them which made deciding pretty hard. So,  I randomly choose a name out of a hat :)…

Drumroll please!……and the winner is ANNE CONIFF! (Anne, please email me with your address)…..and  DARCI, KRISTIN, WES, TARA and SHITAL!

In the end, I believe you all are winners because you each took the time to think about your 2014, so I’ll be sending Anne the print and all of you others a little something as well. If you could please send me an email with your full name and mailing address at kajalita@gmail.com by Thursday, Jan 9, 14…I will be mailing these goodies Friday morning.

Now back to the almond drink…here’s a little video on me preparing it and below is the recipe…thanks to my friend, Tarak…it’s also going to be translated into czech on his Youtube Channel, tarak. Thx Tarak! The below recipe is for two servings…I hope you enjoy and feel rejuvenated!

Almond Ojas Drink
Author:
Recipe type: Ayurvedic Home Remedy
Cuisine: Indian

Ingredients
  • 2 cups warm milk (I like organic and as unprocessed milk as I can find)
  • 20 blanched almonds, peeled and rinsed*
  • ½ teaspoon cardamon
  • ¼- 1/2 teaspoon pepper (depends on your taste)
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 teaspoon honey (I prefer local honey)
Instructions
  1. Warm milk on stove (do not bring to a boil)
  2. Place all ingredients in blender and blend for 2-3 minutes or until smooth.
Notes
* To blanch almonds, soak overnight in boiling water and then peel in the morning.

VEGAN: This is not a vegan recipe. However, minus the milk and honey, I would suggest eating blanched almonds daily, as they are a good source of protein and provide great strength and energy. In addition, turmeric can be taken in just powder form…after all it is a wonder herb.
