The making of the Wanderlust Exhibit

Last June I was inspired to put together a show proposal to submit to Del Ray Artisans Gallery; a co-op gallery I’ve been a member of since 2015. I decided the theme I wanted to focus on was travel, adventure and new experiences….thus the name Wanderlust emerged. In the late fall, I got the good news that my proposal was accepted and that’s when I tagged in my sister….a real connoisseur of travel…whom I knew I would have fun putting a month-long exhibit like this on with.

The Curation Process

Our show was an open call exhibit, which means it was open to any and all artists in the NOVA/ DC area to apply to. We had 63 artists submit a total of 125 pieces of art….which we curated down to 80 pieces of art from 45 artists. As curators of the show, we’ve had the opportunity to over see the receiving of all the artwork, group and hang it all up and at the end of the month we’ll facilitate the take down and pick up of all work.

The DRA Gallery is a co-op gallery–so it’s a member run gallery, which means all artists accepted in the show, take on 3 hours of gallery hosting hours, which covers the gallery hours for the month that our show runs. In addition, all artists helped out with creating a spectacular opening night :).

Opening Night

This past Friday, June 1, was the opening reception to our exhibit and I’m happy to report everything turned out beautifully :). We had about 150 ppl attend and everyone seem to enjoy the beautiful art, live music, diverse crowd and eclectic mix of food.

The exhibit will be up until June 24, so if live in the area and were not able to stop by on opening night…you have an open-ended invitation to do so anytime during gallery hours this month :).

Here’s to a summer of travel, adventure and new experiences!

Lots of love,
Kajal
